Volkswagen has officially announced the 2016 Golf GTI Clubsport Edition 40.
This special edition GTI was built to celebrate 40 years of the GTI and features up to 286 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. These figures are achievable through the use of an “overboost” function that will provide temporary increases in power.
When not using overboost the Edition 40 will produce 261 hp.
The added performance of the overboost function means the Edition 40 will reach 60 mph from a standstill in just 6.3 seconds on the way to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.
The Edition 40 uses a tweaked version of the 1984cc TSI unit that is currently performing duty in the Golf R.
Upgrades over the standard GTI include modified front and rear bumpers as well as new 18-inch wheels and a modified rear spoiler.
The starting price for the Edition 40 is £30,875 and production will be limited. How limited, however, is unclear. VW expects to sell less than 1000 units, but did not say if they will cap production below that figure.
Expect the first deliveries to begin in summer of this year.
