Mercedes-AMG recently announced a Nurburgring time for its upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT R. It managed a lap of the Green Hell in just 7:10.9 minutes! That’s a pretty impressive time, as the onboard video proves.

The test was conducted by German magazine “sport auto” with Nordschleife specialist Christian Gebhardt at the wheel. The lap is the first time that journalists have been let loose with the car. The time beats some incredible machinery to set the 7th fastest time for a production car (by our calculations).

We’re told that the time is also the fastest for a road-going rear-wheel drive sports car ever tested by the German motoring magazine.

How has is managed to achieve this? The racing version of the Mercedes-AMG GT has had a very successful year. It is the natural basis for the Mercedes-AMG GT R then. The GT-R benefits from similar styling with wider fenders at the front and rear, hiding a 57 mm wider track. The front bumper gets a larger spoiler and the rear bumper, a large double diffuser and spoiler combination.

Under the bonnet, the 4.0 litre twin-turbocharged V8 gets a 75 hp performance boost for a peak figure of 585 hp with 700 Nm of torque. The power increase is achieved through new turbochargers with 0.15 bar of boost. 0-100 km/h happens in just 3.6 seconds with a top speed of 318 km/h.

We can’t wait to get behind the wheel!
