BMW has just announced that it has developed street lights capable of charging electric vehicles thanks to the in-built sockets of the lights.
Next year, the German automaker will run a pilot program with the lights in Munich alongside the existing street lighting infrastructure in the city.
Importantly, the BMW street lights are not manufacturer specific meaning all electric cars can use them as charging stations. Charging payments will be handled through a dedicated mobile phone app.
When discussing the technology, member of the board of management of BMW Peter Schwarzenbauer said, “Seamless charging infrastructure is essential if we want to see more electric vehicles on the road in our cities in the future.”
Alongside the development of this electric car charging street lights, BMW recently invested into software helping drivers of electric cars find parking and charging stations.
