In an effort to smash the 10.6 quarter mile the guys behind the Tesla Racing Channel went all out and set a new world record. In order to accomplish this, they followed the advice of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who said that the removal of the ‘frunk’ will lead to a significant weight reduction and improve the Model S’ performance even further.
In the video we see how removing the frunk (front trunk) gives us a unique insight into the drivetrain of the Tesla Model S as it exposed all the wires and electric motor at the front axle. With the frunk removed the Tesla advocates are confident they can crush the 1/4 mile in just 10.5 seconds.
In the first run the Tesla Model S P100D in fact manages to clock 10.4775 on the quarter mile. Upon launch you can immediately see the amount of torque that is liberated with the now even lighter front slightly being lifted. Mind you, that is a car that weighs just as much as the average Range Rover.
Finally in the third run with launch control, where we assume that the battery has already suffered quite a bit from the draining ‘ludicrous plus’ mode, the Model S P100D manages to set an even faster time of 10.44 seconds. Impressive!
