In between preparing to possibly launch a new supercar to sit above the GranTurismo and/or an entry-level sports car, Maserati is also said to be working on something which it hopes will please the masses.

No, Maserati isn’t going to be dropping the prices of all its models, but if the latest rumors are to be believed, it could be preparing to launch a new compact crossover to compete with the Range Rover Evoque, Audi Q5 and the upcoming Porsche Macan or Cajun.

Although details are very scarce at the moment, reports suggest that the Trident-bearing brand from Italy may be based on a future Jeep crossover, like the larger and more expensive Maserati Levante will be built around the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s platform.

This new Jeep could be the small Liberty SUV which is set to share its own platform with a multitude of cars including the Dodge Dart and Alpha Romeo Giulia.

As always, this is purely speculation and if Maserati were ever to unveil such a car it would not come before 2015 or 2016. As a result, you shouldn’t get too excited just yet.
