With Maserati reportedly planning a new entry-level sedan, said to be called the Ghibli, the latest rumors are suggesting that the Italian marque is also prepping a new supercar to sit above the current GranTurismo and top out the Maserati line-up.

As with most reports of this nature, details are far and few between, but the story originates on Autoweek who claim to have heard straight from the mouth of a Maserati employee that the brand is working on a sports car above the GranTurismo and consequently wants to crate a completely different car, rather than just another special edition of the outgoing GranTurismo.

The future Maserati should feature completely different bodywork while still maintaining that traditional and aggressive Maserati exterior appearance. In order to outperform the GranTurismo, the new car would possibly feature a brand new Ferrari derived V8 engine, possibly similar to the one fitted in the 458 Italia or a derivate of the new twin-turbo V8 fitted to the Quattroporte, and producing in excess of 500 horsepower.

With that being said, it’s likely that the yet-unnamed car would maintain the luxurious ride and interior Maserati’s have become known for in recent decades.
