German language business paper Handelsblatt recently published a very interesting article, based on an interview given by Porsche CEO Matthias Müller. Müller confirms that Porsche are interested in producing a mid-engined supercar above the 911 range with a price tag competitive with the Ferrari 458 Italia and McLaren MP4-12C. Of course though, it’s early days at the moment.

The move comes as Porsche sets itself a goal of 200,000 cars annually. The supercar would potentially join Porsche‘s upcoming Cajan and the Porsche Sport Turismo concept that was so well received at the 2012 Paris Motor Show.

Despite the tough economic climate, Müller is optimistic about reaching the 200,000 car figure by 2018. Porsche sales are on target to achieve record sales figures for 2012.
