When looking back through time at designs and icons that defined the automotive industry cars such as the Porsche 911 and Lamborghini Miura are often mentioned. Another car that has earned legendary status is the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL. Complete with Gullwing doors in Coupe form, the 300 SL is one of the most collectable cars to have ever existed.

As a result, demand massively outstrips supply and prices have gone through the roof. That brings us on to the example we have here that has recently been sold for an eye watering $1.9Million, not at auction, but as a private sale. With only 45,687 original miles on its odometer, the four-speed Gullwing was sold with its original belly pans, tools, books, and optional Nardi steering wheel, this is one of the best examples around.

The ’54 Gullwing brought this record price because of its pristine condition and flawless mechanics,” explained Joseph Carroll, president of RK Collection. “This typifies the exceptional quality of the vehicles we make available to car collectors both here in the U.S., and throughout the world. This is underscored by the fact that this transaction signifies a three-year high for a’54 Gullwing, establishing a new price-point in the collector car market.”
