After a couple of years in uncertainty and delays, it seems like BMW is finally bringing an open-top version of their flagship BMW i8 sports coupe to market in 2018. The Bavarian brand already showcased an i8 roadster concept at the 2012 Beijing Auto Show but the production version was delayed multiple times.
2018, that’s the year the BMW i8 Roadster will hit the market according to BMW CEO Harald Krüger. Otherwise very little detail about the new open top sports coupe was revealed, except that it would be unveiled together with a revised version of the i8 coupe. Both are expected to get a range upgrade and a more powerful electric motor.
Krüger expects that the range upgrade will favor the future i8’s sales numbers, looking back at a rather successful introduction of a more powerful battery with extended range for their BMW i3. The driving range of the i3 was recently increased from 190 km (118 miles) to 300 km (186 miles).
