Here are some recent spy shots that reveal more on the variety of next generation BMW 5 Series coming up. What immediately becomes apparent when scrolling through the images is the clear resemblance to the current generation F10/F11, directly in line with the design strategy of the other large German brands.

Changes to the new 5 Series are kept at a minimum with details such as the headlights and dynamic side panels being slightly altered. Furthermore both front and rear bumpers are said to receive a sportier look while the taillights should also get a modest redesign. The taillights will get a sleeker and longer look than those on the current F10 generation.

What is however new is the fact that the new generation will be based on BMW’s next generation platform called ’35up’. At the heart of the new platform are new lightweight materials and construction that can easily be fitted to mass production cars. CFRP is expected to play an important role in the matter as the recent 7 Series generation marked the start of a new generation of cars equipped with the latest lightweight material technology.

On the inside the 5 Series is expected to remain similar but with a fresh touch. Key for the designers was to create a balanced mix of classy, sporty and premium design. We can expect to see a redesigned dashboard with free-standing LCD display and a bunch of new tech first introduced on the 7 Series. The new iDrive system is also expected to make its way to the 5 Series and so are the new touchscreen, gesture-based functions and over-the-air updates modules.
