Audi might be planning an offense to rival the Mercedes-Maybach with more luxurious versions and a longer wheelbase of their flagship Audi A8. On top of that, they are also considering a coupé version of the A8, to rival the Mercedes S-Class Coupé.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class surely offers the most choices when it comes to different dimensions of luxury on wheels. BMW’s 7-Series and Audi’s A8 have never made it past ‘just’ a sports version and a long wheelbase version of their flagship models. Audi however is planning on changing that with the introduction of the next generation Audi A8.

The Audi A8 is currently available in a conventional setup and with an extended wheelbase, the Audi A8 L. Mercedes-Benz on the other hand offers the conventional S-Class, S-Class extended wheelbase and additionally the range-topping Mercedes-Maybach and Pullman versions. Add the S-Class Coupé and convertible to that list and customers get to choose between 6 different vehicles.

Audi’s new technical chief Dr. Stefan Knirsch recently admitted that further and longer versions of the Audi A8 are indeed in examination. “The success of the extra-long version of the S-Class has got us wondering about whether there could be a business case for that in the future,” he further commented.

You may remember Audi’s reveal of a six-door A8 earlier this year, but the German brand insisted that this was a one-off model for a customer that had this specific request. What are your thoughts, would you be interested in an even longer and more luxurious Audi A8?
