It has just been announced that the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR has set 13 lap records on a number of different racetracks across the United States. In doing so, the new Viper ACR has managed to outperform both the Porsche 918 Spyder and McLaren P1.

Certainly one of the most impressive lap records for a production car set by the 2016 Viper ACR is around Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. With Randy Pobst behind the wheel, the car set a truly incredible 1:28.65 second lap time. By comparison, with Pobst driving a 918 Spyder, the best time he set was a 1:29.89 while the P1’s best lap around Laguna Seca is a 1:30.71. The time is also 5.27 seconds faster than the previous-generation Viper ACR

All of the records have been certified by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) in a Viper ACR equipped with the Extreme Aero Package producing in excess of 770 kg of downforce. It includes a massive rear wing, front splitter, dive plans and a carbon fibre rear diffuser. Powering the car is a naturally-aspirated 8.4-litre V10 engine delivering 645 hp. Massive carbon ceramic brakes are also utilised alongside fully adjustable suspension.

Discussing the achievement, head of passenger car brands at Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and Fiat for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles North America, Tim Kuniskis said “The SCCA has certified that the new 2016 Dodge Viper ACR holds more track records than any other production car in the world. We expected our new Viper ACR to be the fastest street-legal Viper track car ever. Now we know without a doubt that it is.”

As it stands, no Nurburgring lap time has been set in the new Viper ACR due to the speed limits implemented on the German circuit earlier in the year. However, with the limits set to be lifted next year, it seems likely that Dodge will head to the ‘Ring with sights on a new production car lap record. The previous-gen ACR lapped the circuit in 7:12 and the new car should be significantly faster.

  1. That is pure insanity. The only thing the GT3RS has over this thing is the badge. Dodge earned my respect with this car. I just wish they would get back into factory racing with the Viper.
