McLaren F1 "LM"

The biggest collection of privately-owned hypercars is set to cross the auction block at this year’s Monterey Car Week. The Californian event normally attracts some sensational line-ups. This year’s event looks set to be bigger and better than ever before. The Portfolio collection is said to belong to one single owner and will be auctioned by RM Sotherby’s.

Judging by a couple of the lots, we would hazard a guess that this is the collection of Don Wallace of Tampa, Florida. The tell-tale car is the stunning McLaren F1 up for offer. Car number 73, this particular car started life as a normal road-going McLaren F1. Once the LM was revealed, the owner decided to have the factory retro-fit the LM parts to his normal car. Whilst this isn’t a genuine LM, it has the LM-Spec Engine and Extra High Downforce Kit.

Another highlight is the Ferrari 250 LM. Chassis 6105, it was on display at the 1964 Earl’s Court Motor Show and competed in a number of UK events. The car has been raced hard at classic events yet has been Certified by Ferrari Classiche as retaining all of its original mechanical components.

Two Bugatti’s are also up for grabs. Chassis no. 001 and chassis no. 300, the first and last Coupe examples. Both were recently displayed at the Geneva Motor Show 2015. Chassis number 001 has just 800 miles on the odometer, whereas chassis number 300 has 350 miles. Both are obvious collectors pieces!

Bugatti Veyron Super Sport

Ferrari Enzo, chassis no. 141920 is also on offer. The most famous and desirable Enzo of all, this particular example was the very last to leave the production line, number 400. It was gifted by former Ferrari Chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo to the late Pope John Paul II. He chose to auction the car to benefit the relief of tsunami victims. It acheived €950,000 (US$1,274,229) back then and is set to achieve more at Monterey. Other Ferraris include a 288 GTO, the final F40 LM built, and an F50.

We’re also quite excited to see the Lamborghini Reventon and Maserati MC12 cross the block. Previous examples haven’t held their value particularly well so we hope that these two will lift the market. We do know that Don Wallace also owns a Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR and a Porsche 911 GT1, perhaps we might see these join the auction roster over the coming weeks?

Around 30 cars will be offered and we are promised further entries to be announced in the coming weeks. RM Sotherby’s have consigned so many lots that they have added a third day to their event. The Pinnacle Portfolio will be auctioned on the first day, 13 August 2015.
