BMW has officially unveiled the new safety car for the 2014 DTM racing season, a 2014 BMW M4 Coupe.

The M4 Coupe will lead all 23 DTM cars around the race circuits throughout the course of the racing season. BMW is showcasing multiple M Performance parts on the car, including a carbon fiber front splitter, carbon fiber side skirts, a carbon rear diffuser, carbon mirror caps and a carbon boot spoiler. A special M Performance exhaust system will also be used on the car.

Of course, it has also been modified with the standard safety car fare such as an LED light bar, KW coilovers, a special fuel pump for overseas transport, a fire extinguisher, a roll bar, a communications radio and Recaro racing seats with Schroth harnesses.

To safely guide 23 race cars around some of the world’s most demanding race circuits, the safety car must have a certain degree of sportiness to it. This is where the M4’s completely new, 431 hp, twin turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine comes in handy. It allows the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.1 seconds and on to its electronically limited top speed of 155 mph, not that the safety car will be going that fast.

The M4 Coupe Safety Car will make its debut at the seventh race of the DTM season, set to be held at the Nürburgring on August 17, 2014.
