Ford Motor Company has created a special 2014 Ford Mustang GT U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds Edition. The car was designed by Ford design and engineering teams for the EAA Young Eagles (Experimental Aircraft Association). It joins five other cars which have been created with inspirations from the US Air Force aircraft. Like its predecessors, it will be auctioned with proceedings going to the EAA Young Eagles program, which provides free introductory flights to more than 1.6 million youth since 1992.

The Thunderbird Edition will be auctioned on 01 August. It celebrates the 60th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, the fastest, multi-jet flight demonstration team in the world. Thunderbirds fly the F-16 Falcon which is known by a glossy red, blue and white paint scheme similar to the national flag. Edsel B. Ford II, a member of the Ford board of directors said:

The dedication and excellence displayed by the United States Air Force Thunderbirds are qualities we also celebrate at Ford. With this year’s beautiful U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds Edition Mustang, we’ve captured the recognizable symbols of their stature and paired it with the innovation our Ford design and engineering teams build into all of our products.

Through this project, we take great pride in continuing our support for EAA and the Young Eagles organization.

This 2014 Ford Mustang has also been modified with similar colors as the F-16 Falcon, the front and rear wide body panels were made by TS Designs while Creations n’ Chrome created the belly pan. As you can see, the car runs on 22-inch Forgiato Wheels, the interior on the other hand was also inspired by the F-16 Falcon. It has a new navigation system with Recaro seats sporting Thunderbird elements.

Its performance features Ford Racing supercharger, a new suspension handling package and Brembo brakes.

In recent years, the same Ford Design team has created the Mustang AV8R in 2008 that borrows inspirations from the F-22 “Raptor,” and was auctioned at $500,000. In 2009 they created the Ford’s AV-X10 “Dearborn Doll” Mustang paying tribute to the World War II aircraft. In 2010 the SR-71 “Blackbird” Mustang inspired by the legendary reconnaissance jet was created by the late Carroll Shelby who is a former U.S. Air Force flight instructor and Jack Roush who is a longtime P-51 pilot.

In 2011, the “Blue Angels” Mustang was created to celebrate 100 years of United States naval aviation and finally in 2012 they showed the “Red Tails” Mustang which paid tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen- the P-51 Mustang pilots who were the United States’ first African American military airmen.
