2014 BMW X5

The 2014 BMW F15 X5 has finally been revealed. First thing that strikes your senses at first sight of the X5 is that the new restyled headlights show similar cue to that of the BMW F10 5 series. Other cues from the X3 series can also be traced on the body but the Sports Activity Vehicle has still managed to bring out what it’s known for-and that’s boldness!

Engine
Now that we have the new Range Rover, BMW’s top competitor in the SUV market; the Germans did not spare even the slightest details in the new X5. Let’s start with the engine options. It will come with three variants at first namely the BMW X5 xDrive50i fitted with a V8 petrol engine that’s rated 330 kW/450 hp. The second is a BMW X5 xDrive30d fitted with a new six-cylinder in-line diesel unit RATED at 190 kW/258hp and lastly the BMW X5 M50d M Performance Automobile featuring a tri-turbo six-cylinder in- line diesel 280 kW/381 hp.

That’s not all, later on in December this year, BMW will introduce the BMW X5 xDrive40d, BMW X5 xDrive35i, BMW X5 xDrive25d and BMW X5 sDrive25d with CO2 emissions of just 149 g/km. The performance of these engines is not disappointing at all, according to the figures given, driver should enjoy driving any of these.

The top of the range BMW X5 xDrive50i with 450hp and 650 Nm of torque at 2,000 – 4,500 rpm will do 0-100km/h in 5 seconds. Its top speed is 250km/h. It will come with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology-two turbochargers, direct injection and Valvetronic. The BMW X5 xDrive30d will do 0-100km/h in 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 230km/h. It will feature a turbocharger with variable inlet geometry and common rail direct injection.

The interesting one comes from the BMW X5 M50d M Performance Automobile. It will do 0-100km/h in 5.3 seconds and a top speed of 250km/h. It features three turbochargers, high-pressure with variable turbine geometry, common rail direct injection with piezo injectors and maximum injection pressure 2,200 bar.

The Looks Outside
The 2014 BMW F15 X5 had to be set apart from its predecessors, being the third generation meant incorporating the best design technology at the right place and for the right purpose. You shall notice the short front overhang, its long wheelbase and upright A-pillars. It shall be identified as a member of the X-family due to the bumper’s X-shaped contour lines.

The signatory BMW kidney grills run across and extending to the headlights. These headlights come with LED technology fitted within the twin circular ring headli9ghts. One can choose to have the LED fog lights or the Adaptive LED Headlights, both are given as options. As for the BMW X5 xDrive50i and X5 M50d the xenon headlights come as standard.

Air flow will be enhanced through BMW’s latest technology of Aero Blades. The X5 is the first of their models to use this feature; it’s has black air-channelling elements aligned well with the roof spoiler for better aerodynamics. The front apron is also fitted with air intakes to feed the engine at all times. Buyers will choose between 11 colors among them being new metallic finish Sparkling Brown Brilliant Effect.

BMW’s long history in luxury and perfection lives on in this third generation X5, a charming interior that blends between luxury and sport. To do this, they improved the lighting inside the cabin, which means better visuals on the dial instruments and also the door panels lighting. The iDrive system will let you choose between nine pre-stored colors.

Buyers will be treated to the standard Oxide Silver dark matt for the BMW X5 xDrive30d, Poplar Grain fine wood for the BMW X5 xDrive50i and Aluminum Hexagon for the BMW X5 M50d interior trims. All the trims will be complemented by a high-gloss black surface with Pearl Gloss Chrome accent strips. The car’s luxury interior has room for up to 7 people.
To make it easier for buyers to choose between the looks of their BMW X5, the engineers came up with two individualization programs namely the; Design Pure Experience and Design Pure Excellence.

The Design Pure Experience features a brushed stainless steel underbody protection, newly designed air intake bars in matt silver and a rear trim strip. The B-pillar and C-pillar trim come in high-gloss black alongside the BMW Individual Exterior Line Aluminum satinated trim for the side windows. Matte chrome finish was used on the exhaust tailpipes. The driver and his passengers will enjoy the Exclusive Nappa leather trim in Mocha/Black and contrast stitching not to mention the wood finishing.

The Design Pure Excellence comes with black kidney grille bars in high-gloss chrome fronts, T-shaped bars for the outer air intakes and louvres for the lower aperture. This will be topped up with a chrome trim strip for the rear apron and Chrome Line Exterior adornments for the side windows. A high- gloss black trim will be used on the exterior mirror bases, B-pillars and C-pillars.

This package will also have Exclusive Nappa leather trim, Ivory White details with contrast stitching and wood interior trim elements in American Oak. The driver will enjoy an instrument panel in fulled leather surface. Atlas grey will be the color on the door panels.

Drivability
The entire engine options will be mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, as for BMW X5 M50d, things get a little bit interesting as there are shifter paddles behind the steering wheel. The shifter paddles will be optional in the other X5 options. Eco-Pro feature-the feature that will ensure you save on fuel as you drive. When you decelerate at speeds between 50km/h and 160km/h without breaking, the engine will go into coasting automatically.

There will be 5 suspension packages offered; one is the Comfort Adaptive Suspension package with Dynamic Damper control and air suspension and automatic self-levelling rear suspension. Two is the Adaptive M suspension that is standard on the BMW X5 M50d, It offers Sport and Sport+ modes. Three is the Dynamic Adaptive Suspension package and lastly is the Professional Adaptive Suspension package that combines Comfort and Dynamic Suspension.

There will be tons of safety mechanisms and infotainment that the driver can play with, the BMW apps will offer apps like Facebook, maps and Twitter. Safety will include warnings inn case of pedestrian and of course the standard measures. All in all, the new BMW X5 has a task ahead, and that is prove the consumers that it’s indeed the best amongst competitors like the Range Rover.
