Ahead of its official unveiling at the 2013 Detroit Motor Show in January, Mercedes-Benz have released the first official spyshots of their new CLA and CLA 45 AMG models.

The car takes many design cues from the recently released Mercedes Concept Style Coupe, which is currently being shown at the Los Angeles Auto Show. As of now, the CL and AMG variant will only be available in a four-door option. Don’t rule out a coupe version in the future, however. It just won’t be available at launch.

In terms of power, the engine options will be the same as those found on the current A-class. The AMG version, however, will get a special turbocharged 2.0 liter four-cylinder good for 332lb-ft of torque and 354hp. Expect the engine to be mated to a Mercedes-Benz seven-speed DCT automatic box.

The Germans have also released a video, showcasing pre-production versions of the standard CLA and turbocharged AMG model getting sideways on a test track. Check it out below.

  1. It’ll be interesting to see how this Baby Benz fares here in the US considering the abject sales failure of the old C-Class hatchback as well as BMW’s dismal US sales of its 1-Series . The main obstacle I’m seeing with the CLA’s success being the fact that it is as large as the current C-Class ( MBOC NA newsletter ) kind of negating its Baby Benz status . But then again maybe offering an AMG version right out the gate may help . Time will tell .
