BMW Test Driver Dies in 3-Series Prototype on Autobahn

German media reports that a 45-year-old BMW test driver died in an accident on the A92 near BMW’s Dingolfing factory yesterday. It’s believed he was testing a new 3-Series hybrid model at high speed when he passed several trucks. One of the trucks pulled out and while the test driver swerved right to avoid impact, he plowed straight under the rear trailer.

The driver was alone in the car and is thought to have died on impact. As you’ll see from the photos, the accident was particularly violent. The A92 had to be closed towards Deggendorf for hours as recovery of the vehicle was particularly difficult. A crash scene expert was dispatched and German authorities are conducting an investigation.

The identity of the driver is unknown at this point, however, it is clear that the wreckage was dragged a long distance by the truck driver. Not other injuries were reported and the truck driver is thought to have walked away from the accident.
