Fresh details of the Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG, the most affordable AMG model to date, have been revealed today by UK magazine AutoCar. The A45 AMG will be pitched as a direct rival to Audi RS3 and BMW M135i models. According to AutoCar, the engine is being developed by AMG engineers in Brixworth, England.
It should feature Mercedes-Benz’s turbocharged 2.0 liter four-cylinder petrol engine with 330bhp and more than 295lb-ft of torque. Coupled to the engine should be a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox with a specially tuned Haldex-style multi-plate clutch. All-wheel drive with a rear bias will be key to the A45 AMG experience. Expect 0-100km/h times of around five seconds.
Technical features will include an automatic stop/start function and brake energy recuperation. The A45 AMG should get a unique chassis set-up when compared to the A250. It will use the same MacPherson strut with new bushes, wider tracks, firmer springs and dampers, larger diameter anti roll bars and a reduced ride height. Expect the three stage AMG electronic stability program to feature too.
In terms of exterior details expect a redesigned front bumper, AMG grille, wider front fenders, carbon fiber effect mirror housings, wider doors sills, a roof spoiler, a new rear bumper with an integrated diffuser element and distinctive chromed tail pipes.
Expect the Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG to cost around 40,000 euros pre tax. Expect an official unveil later this year with sales starting early 2013.
