The release of the Toyota FT-86 sports car is getting more and more shape. The production version of the new Japanese sports car will go on sale in 2012 with power coming from Subaru’s new 2.0 liter four-cylinder boxer engine fitted with Toyota’s D-4S technology, similar to the Scion FR-S Concept revealed at the New York Motor Show.
The 2.0-liter horizontally opposed gasoline engine develops 148 horsepower and 197Nm of torque, but in the case of the FT-86, output is expected to increase significantly. The engine is linked to a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic transmission. The manual offers shifts with a short-throw, while the automatic transmission features shifts that are initiated by steering- wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Power is distributed via a limited-slip differential.
Stay tuned for more on the Japanese sports car in the near future.
