Rebelle Rally 2026: 2,500km of Desert Adventure Without GPS

Over the decades, the Dakar Rally has become one of the greatest adventures in motorsport, surviving even its relocation between continents. For more than ten years, however, another event has been delivering similarly spectacular challenges across the dusty landscapes of the American West. The Rebelle Rally combines extreme off-road driving with old-fashioned navigation, and there is one important distinction: it’s exclusively for women.

Covering 2,500 kilometres through the vast wilderness of California, Utah and Nevada would be an adventure in itself. But the competitors in the Rebelle Rally must tackle the journey without the assistance of modern navigation systems. Starting in Las Vegas, the teams must find their way through dusty deserts, across mountain ridges and over dried-up lakebeds before finally reaching the chequered flag at the Imperial Sand Dunes more than a week later.

The field for the 11th edition is wonderfully varied. Experienced female rally crews tackle loose rocks, shifting sands and jagged terrain in everything from ageing Land Rover Defenders to heavily modified Ford Ranger Raptors, Jeep Wranglers and Ineos Grenadiers. There are also some rather unexpected entries among the hardcore off-road machinery, including a 2006 Porsche Cayenne S, a Subaru Forester Hybrid and a Mini Countryman Untamed, all extensively prepared for the demanding conditions.

The objective is simple enough on paper: reach the finish and collect as many points as possible by successfully navigating the countless checkpoints along the route. Yet the Rebelle Rally is about far more than winning or finishing positions.

“When you step outside your comfort zone, overcome challenges and acquire skills that last a lifetime, you’ll never get lost again,” reflects Lyn Woodward, a multiple Rebelle Rally competitor, surrounded by the temporary campsite, spare fuel cans and stacks of tyres.

The 45 competing vehicles bear little resemblance to their standard production counterparts. After all, covering 2,500 kilometres across challenging terrain, often at a considerable pace, requires some serious preparation.

Whether competing in the 4×4 or X-Cross category, the vehicles are equipped with off-road tyres, auxiliary LED lighting, underbody protection, spare wheels and additional fuel capacity to maximise their independence in remote areas. With daily stages covering between 200 and 350 kilometres, this is certainly no event for beginners.

The 4×4 category accommodates traditional four-wheel-drive vehicles equipped with low-range gearing, including most serious off-roaders and pickup trucks. The X-Cross category, meanwhile, is intended for all-wheel-drive vehicles with monocoque construction and no low-range transmission. These are generally more conventional SUVs and crossovers, although extensive modifications allow them to tackle everything from rocky mountain passes and sand dunes to water crossings.

Making the competition even more demanding is the complete absence of modern navigation technology. GPS systems are prohibited, leaving competitors to rely entirely on paper maps, a compass, a roadbook and their own instincts.

Unsurprisingly, preparation often takes an entire year. Teams spend countless hours studying navigation techniques, familiarising themselves with their vehicles and practising across sand dunes, rocky trails and loose surfaces.

“The Rebelle Rally is as much a test of judgement and teamwork as it is of the vehicle itself,” explains Erika Ferrer, who is responsible for navigation in the Mini Countryman carrying competition number 206.

“Every decision matters, from choosing the correct driving line to navigating terrain that often looks completely different from what appears on the map. Felicia and I have invested a great deal of time in learning to work perfectly together as a team.”

Spending more than a week travelling through some of the most remote parts of the United States presents a formidable challenge for both the competitors and their vehicles. Nights are spent in temporary tented camps before the teams set off again the following morning.

With numerous special challenges scattered across the 2,500-kilometre route, experience is certainly an advantage. Nevertheless, the 2026 event includes 16 newcomers, all keen to prove themselves against more experienced competitors.

Despite the competitive atmosphere and inevitable exhaustion, there is a strong sense of camaraderie throughout the field. Teams are quick to help one another when difficulties arise, even when there are valuable points at stake.

Felica Killman is an experienced rally driver but is competing in the Rebelle Rally for the first time.

“Our first few days at the Rebelle Rally have been a fantastic experience as newcomers. We’ve worked well together, discussed our strategy and had plenty of fun along the way,” she explains.

After each demanding day behind the wheel, the competitors return to camp to prepare for whatever the following morning might bring.

Some stages, including routes around the dried-up lakebeds near Tonopah and through Paymaster Canyon, prove relatively straightforward. Others are considerably more punishing.

There is still time for a photographic stop at the legendary Roy’s roadside landmark near Amboy on Route 66, before the convoy sets off early the following morning, guided by compass bearings into the vast expanse of Johnson Valley.

Here, the terrain becomes considerably more demanding. Rocky trails, sandy sections and supposedly dry riverbeds, some containing unexpected water, push several teams to their limits.

Progress across the rockier sections is painfully slow, with choosing the correct line becoming as important as maintaining momentum.

“Finding the right line was extremely challenging. It was a very precise route, and we were only managing around 16 km/h throughout the day,” recalls Desirée Chandler of Team 143, looking out of her vehicle’s side window with her face covered in dust.

The climax of the Rebelle Rally takes place among the spectacular Imperial Sand Dunes, better known to off-road enthusiasts as Glamis. This enormous expanse of sand, described as the largest in the United States, provides a suitably dramatic setting for the final stage.

The towering dune crests and challenging terrain around the Coachella Canal push the vehicles to their limits, particularly those competing in the X-Cross category. However, even the more capable traditional off-roaders are far from guaranteed an easy passage.

As if the demands of the final stage weren’t enough, the preceding night proves particularly unpleasant for many competitors.

Shortly before midnight, strong winds sweep through the base camp, with gusts reaching speeds of up to 80 km/h. Tents are battered by the conditions, and the chance of a decent night’s sleep quickly disappears.

“We were hoping today’s rally would be cancelled,” admits an exhausted Ciegi Shaw of Team 146 with a weary smile. “At 1:30 in the morning, I had to hold the tent up with my foot because one of the poles had bent.”

Despite the difficult conditions, the final stage goes ahead as planned.

“The wind rewards the strong, the resilient and the determined,” says Rebelle Rally founder Emily Miller, delighted by the commitment and determination shown by the competing teams.

For many of the women taking part, the experience is about much more than the final results. The combination of physical endurance, navigation, vehicle preparation and teamwork makes the Rebelle Rally a unique test of both driver and machine.

And while the dust has barely settled on the 2026 event, many competitors are already looking ahead to the next edition. The Rebelle Rally will return on 6 October 2027, bringing a fresh set of challenges across the American wilderness and another opportunity for its competitors to test themselves against some of the toughest terrain in the country.
