Earlier in the week, RM Sotheby’s London auction produced a surprise result. RM’s London event has become an annual tradition, attracting some very exciting cars. This year was no different. A clutch of iconic 1990’s Porsche’s were the cause of the surprise this year. None moreso than a certain Riviera Blue Porsche 993 GT2!

Prior to the event, the 1995 Porsche 993 GT2 was given a £750,000 and £850,000 estimate by the famous auction house. It is one of just 57 road going examples of the GT2 (194 if you count the race prepared models). Completely original, this example came from a private collection and had covered just 12,370km since new.

When the hammer eventually dropped, the winning bid stood at a staggering £1,848,000. It set a precedent for other air-cooled Porsche models with a Speed Yellow 1993 964 Turbo S Lightweight hitting £974,400, almost four times its top estimate and 1995 993 Carrera RS Clubsport almost doubling its estimate.

The result comes at a time when Porsche are preparing to release a brand new Porsche 991 GT2. The new model isn’t expected to have bolt on fenders but will undoubtedly channel the performance of the iconic 993 GT2. It featured a 3.6 litre air-cooled horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine with twin turbochargers and a 430 bhp.
