The 268 mph Bugatti Veyron Super Sport remains the world’s fastest production car but its place in the record books may soon be under jeopardy, with Bugatti confirming it will attempt to break the record once again with the 1,479 horsepower Chiron.
Speaking at the grand opening of the H.R. Owen Bugatti showroom in Mayfair, London, Bugatti board member Dr. Stefan Brungs confirmed the automaker will attempt to crack 268 mph with the Chiron. The Chiron’s top speed is an estimated 288 mph, with the additional 20 mph accessible due to extra power from the quad-turbocharged 8.0-litre W16 engine and more efficient aerodynamics.
The Veyron Super Sport World Record edition achieved its status as the world’s fastest production car in 2010 at the hands of Bugatti test driver Pierre Henri Raphanel. Representatives from both the Guinness Book of World Records and the German Technical Inspection Agency were present at VW’s Ehra-Lessien test track to watch Raphanel hit speeds of 265.90 mph and 269.80 mph for an average speed over two runs of 267.856 mph.
