Interesting news from Renault today as they announced the Nurburgring lap time for the new Renault Megane RS 275 Trophy-R. Renaultsport models have always had a reputation as track day racers. The Renault Megane RS 275 Trophy-R is no different. It set a 7 minute 54.36 second time, a new record for front wheel drive production cars!
The Renault Megane RS 275 Trophy-R beats the previous record of 7 minutes 58.4 seconds set by Seat in the Seat Leon Cupra. The previous Renault Mégane RS Trophy managed an 8 minute 07.97 second lap by contrast. Prior to the announcement, Renault had set its sights on a sub-8 minute lap. It achieved a lot more than this!
The Renault Megane RS 275 Trophy-R isn’t a normal Megane though (although you can of course buy it from a Renault dealership!). With only two seats, it isn’t practical machine. Only 250 will go on sale in 15 countries. We suspect they are already spoken for, or at least will be after today’s announcements.
The Renault Megane RS 275 Trophy-R sheds 100 kg of weight. It gains a Cup chassis (complete with limited-slip differential), a boosted 275 hp 2.0-litre petrol R.S. engine, a titanium Akrapovic exhaust system, ‘Öhlins Road&Track’ one-way adjustable dampers with composite springs and bespoke Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres.
As you would expect, the Renault Megane R.S. 275 Trophy-R gets a set of race inspired front seats. Recaro Pole Position seats shed 42 kilograms. They feature a six-point harness with aviation-style buckle and a retention beam and safety net. A lithium-ion battery trims the overall weight by another 16 kilograms.
Braking performance is also greatly improved with 350/28-diameter steel and aluminium discs bringing the car’s weight down by a further three kilograms. The paint scheme on the car which set the record is a new two-tone colour scheme, with an Etoilé Black roof and a Pearlescent White finish.
Respect again for Renault Sport!
