Production Audi E-tron Gets Named Audi R4

Audi R4 Rumoured Rendering

If we believe Auto Express these pictures are a preview of the new Audi R4 – the production version of the electric E-tron concept shown at the IAA last month. The R4 is likely to have several petrol-engined versions, positioned between the Audi R8 and the TT. The renderings come after the words from Audi of America’s president Johan de Nysschen who confirmed the release a production model of the E-tron last week.

Within the VW group brand new member Porsche will use the same chassis of “Mini R8” – a new aluminium spaceframe set-up – for the next-gen Boxster and Cayman. Including the body plastic panels the weight of the R4 is expected to around to be 1,500kg. The pictures show a targa-topped roadster trim, but rumours suggest also a coupé and a drop-top. Clearly visible in the design are the LED C-shaped headlights, along with a trademark Audi grille and scalloped sides.

The full sports car range will feature multiple engines, such as an electric and several conventional combustion variants. The electric engine has a lithium-ion battery pack with four electric motors, two on each axle, creating a new chapter in Audi’s quattro four-wheel drive history. In the E-tron an output of around 300bhp, as well as 4,500Nm of torque, delivers instant acceleration with 0-60mph in 4.8 seconds. Top speed is likely to become 140mph. The batteries, placed just behind the two seats, ensure a range of about 155 miles.

Several engines from the current TT line-up, including a 335bhp 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo, are part of the petrol engine line-up.

De Nysschen stated that the new vehicle will debut in the United States in two to three years. He officially said to Autoweek.com; “I expect we will see running examples in the next 24 months
