Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Production to Cease Next Year

Following all the recent rumours about the upcoming successor to the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, we always believed that the German automaker was beginning to shift its focus towards the new car. Well, as it turns out, Mercedes-Benz is planning to kill of the SLS AMG much earlier than expected to make way for the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GT.

According to German blog Mercedes-Benz Passion, production of the standard Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT coupe and SLS AMG Roadster will end in January next year. Following on from that, production will cease of the range-topping Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series 6 months later in June, 2014.

2016 Mercedes-Benz GT

Once that stage is reached, the production facility will be reworked to make way for the Mercedes-Benz GT. Speaking of the Mercedes-Benz GT, it’s pinned to compete with the Porsche 911. In order for the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GT to truly compete with the Porsche 911 line-up, a selection of variants will be offered with the base model to feature a 485hp engine and the aforementioned price tag of 109,000 euros. Mercedes-Benz will then offer a 2016 Mercedes-Benz GT S variant featuring 550hp predicted to cost around 145,000 euros. Topping out the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GT range will be an eventual Black Series variant with around 585hp.
