With the market for all-electric vehicles growing rapidly, Tesla Motors is set to cash in further in the coming years when its Tesla Model S hits European roads later this year before the Tesla Model X SUV is created in production form in 2014-2015.

However, that won’t be the end of Tesla’s expansion with the company also planning a second-generation Tesla Roadster which will push the envelope of what electric sports cars have to offer.

Tesla’s boss George Blankenship stated, “If you fast forward beyond that [2015-2016], we go back to the roadster and do things that people aren’t doing and push the envelope. That would be the next-generation roadster.”

With the EV market growing so exponentially and new technologies being continually discovered and implemented, Blankenship believes that the next-gen Tesla Roadster will dramatically improve upon the original car’s sub-4.0 second sprint to 62mph while also improving on its 200-mile range.

“The original roadster was a proof-of-concept car,” he said. “We did an electric car with over a 200-mile range and 0-60mph in under four seconds. Back then, no one believed it was possible. And then we did the Model S saloon, with 0-60mph in 4.4sec and a 300-mile range.”
