Say hello to the new Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 and GLC 63 Coupe, the latest two performance models to join AMG’s extensive portfolio. The very capable GLC 43 left the world hungry for more, so why not bring the 4.0-liter V8 biturbo to a mid-size SUV for the first time?

The 2018 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 is now the only car in its segment to be powered by a V8. The AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo produces 476 horsepower (350 kW) and 650 Nm of torque in the GLC 63. The GLC 63 S model takes it all the way to 510 hp (375 kW) and 700 Nm of torque. This true wealth of power ensures a 0-100 km/h sprint in just 4 seconds for the standard GLC 63, while the GLC 63 S only takes 3.8 seconds. As standard the top speed is electronically limited at 250 km/h.

Completing the drivetrain is the fine and smooth AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9-speed transmission, the same transmission that debuted in the new Mercedes-AMG E63 4MATIC+. This means it comes with a wet clutch that effectively replaces the torque converter and the gearbox is programmed to deliver extra short shifting times.

Power is diverted to all four wheels through the new 4MATIC+ variable all-wheel drive system. This intelligent AWD system makes sure that there is always the best possible traction, no matter the weather conditions. It continuously calculates the best possible torque distribution according to both the driving conditions and driver’s input.

The new AMG suspension with fully supporting multi-chamber air suspension provides passengers with maximum comfort and a solid base for dynamic driving at the same time. The front axle features a four-link design with special steering knuckles, optimized elastokinematics and radial brake connections. The setup at the rear axle is very similar to that of the latest E63. It’s a multi-link configuration that boosts highly precise wheel control and increased stiffness.

To further improve traction and handling the GLC 63 comes equipped with a mechanical rear-axle limited-slip differential. The GLC 63 S model will come with an electronic version as standard. Both systems reduce loss of traction on the inside wheels when cornering and without the need for brakes to intervene.

In terms of design you could say it’s the traditionally more aggressive ’63’ bodykit that’s being carried over to the GLC. A novel change at the front apron however, is the Panamericana grille that was previously reserved for the AMG GT family only. Whether the exclusive GT grille also stuns on the GLC SUV is something we’ll leave in the middle for now. The rest of the GLC 63 exterior is all quite predictable. A wider stance through more muscular proportions, it’s visually lower to the ground and there are the necessary flics and add-ons that underline the performance aspect of AMG’s latest family member.

At the rear the characteristic rectangular twin-tailpipes at both ends of the car release the lovely symphony from the V8 engine. In the case of the GLC 63 Coupe the tailpipes are nested in the car’s rear diffuser. The regular GLC 63 will feature a subtle spoiler extension from the roof, whereas the rear end of the coupe comes with a distinctive spoiler lip.

The Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 and GLC 63 Coupe will celebrate their world debut this month and are expected to launch by September 2017. Customers can already order their GLC 63 starting from June. We are excited to see the new GLC 63 in the flesh and give it a thorough test in the near future!
