BMW has revealed that the next-generation of X5 will share the same chassis architecture as the 7-series.

The CLAR chassis that underpins the 7-series (and soon the X5) is built using a mixture of high-strength steel, aluminum and carbon fiber. The goal of the platform is to reduce weight all the while increasing structural rigidity.

While the 7-series may be the first model to use the new CLAR platform, BMW will also use the platform in models such as the aforementioned X5 as well as the 3-series and 6-series. The upcoming X7 flagship SUV will also use a highly modified version of the platform.

The CLAR platform is capable of being used in rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configurations. We expect the new X5 to be offered in both variants.

Engine options for the new X5 will likely include a range of options including a 3.0-liter straight six in addition to a new twin-turbocharged V8 engine.

We will keep you updated as we hear more news about the upcoming X5.
