Spy shots have been captured of upcoming Maserati Levante as it undergoes testing in Italy and Sweden.

The Levante crossover will be Maserati’s first foray into the SUV or crossover segment. Styling cues from the Levante spy shots show that the development car closely mirrors the Maserati’s Kubang concept that was first shown off at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show.

The Levante will use a modified version of the rear-wheel drive platforms in use on both the Ghibli and Quattroporte.

Competitors to the Levante include the Porsche Cayenne, the new Bentley Bentayga and, to a lesser extent the Porsche Macan or Range Rover. The Levante will be offered with a variety of engines including a V6 with outputs of 350 hp and 425 hp as well as a V8 that develops more than 560 hp. There will also be a diesel engine with outputs of 250 hp, 275 hp and 340 hp.
