Along with the M2, BMW also launched the X4 M40i at the Detroit Motor Show 2016 and the GTspirit team headed over to the German automaker’s stand to get a closer look.

Under the hood of the X4 M40i is an improved variant of the 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six engine that is seen in BMW’s xDrive35i models. Several tweaks by the German automaker mean that the gasoline engine now produces 355 hp and 465 Nm of torque. Compared to the BMW X4 xDrive35i, these new figures represent a 54 hp and 65 Nm gain.

This engine paired to an eight-speed automatic gearbox, complete with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. The gearbox has been modified to provide sportier shifts than before and also incorporates launch control. Owing to this, the BMW X4 M40i will hit 0 to 96 km/h in 4.7 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

Visually, the X4 M40i comes complete with the M Sport package as well as a set of 19-inch alloy wheels with either all-season run flat tyres measuring 245/45 or performance tyres that are 245/45 at the front and 275/40 at the rear. Larger 20-inch wheels are also offered with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres.
