It seems likely that Nissan plans on offering a new range-topping variant of its potent GT-R sports car before the next-generation model arrives.

The range is currently topped off by the Nissan GT-R Nismo but while speaking with Top Gear, the company’s head of product planning Phillipe Klein said that there is still development potential in Godzilla.

“You know, it’s a never ending quest. There is still development potential there, always,” Klein revealed.

The GT-R Nismo has already proven itself to be particularly potent having lapped the Nurburgring Nordschleife in just 7 minutes and 8 seconds. Its upgraded twin-turbo 3.8-litre V6 delivers 591 hp and compared to the ‘standard’ GT-R, includes revised turbochargers as well as new air intake and exhaust systems and modified ignition timing, aerodynamic changes and exceptionally sticky tyres.

If Nissan is indeed planning on sending off the R35-generation GT-R with a bang, expect in excess of 600 hp as well as further aerodynamic developments.
