The Volkswagen Group has revealed that by 2020, it plans on launching at least 20 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

The news was confirmed by Volkswagen’s chief executive Martin Winterkorn at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show 2015. While few specifics have been given, the electric and hybrid cars will range from compact models through to the likes of the next-generation Volkswagen Phaeton and Audi R8.

“We are in the process of reinventing Europe’s largest automaker, laying the technological, economic and structural foundations,” Winterkorn said. “No commitment to electro-mobility can be any clearer than that. Our Group already has the largest connected vehicle fleet on the road. By 2020 we will have transformed all of our new cars into smartphones on wheels.”

At Frankfurt, the Volkswagen Group introduced both the Porsche Mission-E Concept and Audi e-tron quattro concept. Both are all-electric with ranges of 500 km and preview rivals to the Tesla Model S and Tesla Model X respectively.
