Despite the 2015 Honda Civic Type R being launched just a few months ago, spy shots have already surfaced of the next-generation Civic Type R undergoing testing in Southern Europe.

Unlike the new Honda Civic Type R which is only available in a few select countries, the next-gen car will be a truly global vehicle meaning it will be offered in the United States. More generally, the new Honda Civic will be larger than the current model in part to fill the void left by the larger Honda Accord as it’s been axed in a number of markets.

As for the prototype featured, it is clearly distinguishable from regular models. That is thanks to the massive flared wheel arches as well as the aggressive and more menacing front fascia. Elsewhere, a set of large wheels have been installed wrapped in ultra-low profile tyres. At the rear, an interesting triple exhaust layout similar to the Ferrari 458 Italia is featured while bright red Brembo brake calipers are also present.

It remains to be seen what will power the next-gen Civic Type R but a tuned version of the current turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder seems likely.
