Currently, Fiat is in the midst of developing a rival to the popular Mazda MX-5 dubbed the 124 Spider. Of most interest to us however is the fact that an uprated Abarth variant is also on the cards to rival entry-level Porsche Boxster models.
The Abarth 124 Spider will be introduced sometime after the standard 124 Spider becomes available and will inevitably top out the range. Not too long ago, a prototype of the Abarth variant was spied in the midst of testing in Michigan sounding significantly louder and sportier than previously spied test mules.
Whereas the run-of-the-mill car will receive its power from a turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine, the Abarth will make use of the Alfa Romeo 4C’s 1.75-litre turbo four delivering well over 200 hp. Unlike the Porsche Boxster however, the Abarth 124 won’t be available with a manual transmission with the same dual-clutch transmission as the 4C expected to be the only gearbox option.
Of course, the Abarth 124 Spider could steal some sales from the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider. Consequently, it’s likely that it will be either detuned from the 4C or more powerful while wearing a sticker price to reflect its power output.
Whatever the case may be, it should be an exceptional driver’s car!
