It has emerged that Mercedes-Benz’s performance arm, AMG, could be planning a rival to the Porsche 918 Spyder.

Last year, Motor Trend’s Jonny Lieberman asked AMG chief executive Tobias Moers if the firm was planning a 918 Spyder rival. At the time, he responded with a stern ‘No’. Now however when asked the same question at the Detroit Motor Show 2015, Moers responded with “We want to be seen by the public on the same level as the other sports car maker in Germany.”

While that is far from confirmation, it does suggest that AMG is indeed pondering the possibility of creating a range-topping hypercar to rival the existing trio of the McLaren P1, the aforementioned Porsche 918 Spyder and the LaFerrari.

As such, Liebermann suggests that a potently tuned variant of the new AMG 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 could be fitted to the car and tuned to deliver in the region of 700 hp. Two of the four electric motors from the Mercedes-Benz SLS Electric Drive could then be installed alongside the traditional combustion engine and providing an additional 370 hp
