Video: A Look at the 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT's Biturbo V8

Just after revealing official details about the new 4.0-litre biturbo V8 engine for the 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT, the German manufacturer has released a short video highlighting the new engine which Mercedes-Benz claims is a “quantum leap into the future of technology”. So pretty strong words then.

The Mercedes-AMG GT will be the first Mercedes to utilise a potent 4.0-litre biturbo V8 with it delivering a total of 503 hp at 6250 rpm and 479 lb-ft of torque between 1750 and 4750 rpm. Known internally as the M178, the engine is a completely new replacement for the naturally-aspirated 6.2-litre V8 engine which of course powers the GT’s predecessor, the SLS AMG. The new engine is pinned to power the next-generation Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG as well.

It features the same 83 mm bore and 92 mm stroke as the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder utilised by the A 45 AMG, CLA 45 AMG and GLA 45 AMG. The turbochargers are produced by Borg Warner and operate at a maximum pressure of 2.3 bar.

Some of the other cool features of this new powerplant is the Bosch piezo injection system which delivers up to seven injections per cycle. Elsewhere, the cylinder barrels are finished in the German marque’s Nanoslide material to dramatically reduce friction and improve efficiency.

All up, the new 4.0-litre biturbo V8 engine delivers 126.3 hp per litre. That is an impressive 35.6 hp per litre more than the SLS AMG and its brutal 6.2-litre V8!
