Next-Gen Mercedes-Benz S-Class to Be Greener and Lighter

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class was revealed less than a year ago and already, the German marque is thinking about what it will do with the next-generation S-Class set to arrive before the end of decade.

While speaking about the future S-Class at the recent Geneva Motor Show 2014, Mercedes-Benz S-Class Chief Engineer Dr Hermann-Joseph Storp explained that Mercedes is already looking at how it can improve the environmentally friendly credentials of the S-Class.

Storp said, “We are starting now to think about what will come up for the next-generation of S-Class, we say ‘OK, what can be the next step? It may be that the next S-Class has more aluminium, or aluminium combined with plastics [CFRP], for example.”

And the focus on aluminium or aluminium combined with plastics will be a key one for the next-generation S-Class. As it stands, the current S-Class features a lot more aluminium than the previous car and for the next-gen S-Class, it’ll likely receive even more of the lightweight, yet strong material. Of course, Mercedes-Benz will also be keen to further improve its range of engines for the next S-Class.

“It’s one discussion we have with weight; the other is stiffness for the body, and reducing noise,” Dr Storp continued. “[The] reduction of weight, CO2 reduction, the combination of [a] combustion engine with plug-in electrical power, new batteries… and drag coefficient – to reduce it as far as we can – will again help [the new S-Class].”
