According to reports, the FIA is looking to start a new open-wheel feeder championship.

The new series, which will be titled Formula 4, could launch as early as next year with Dallara having already completed a customer chassis. Formula 4 will slot in below Formula 3 as another series for young drivers to cut their teeth in on the way to Formula 1.

The FIA is looking to encourage individual countries to host their own version of the series, as opposed to one worldwide championship. A similar bootstrapping attitude is being taken towards engine regulations. Countries are free to choose their own engine suppliers. The one restriction being the size and maximum horsepower — 1.6-liter, 150 hp.

While Dallara is the only chassis manufacturer to have confirmed involvement, the series remains open to others looking to sell a different version of the F4 platform.

Dallara will launch the car in the spring of 2014. While there is no official start date for the series, the FIA is looking to bring in smaller open-wheel series like the Formula Ford championship among others.
