BMW M1 Procar Andy Warhol.

An exhibition on historical BMW cars just opened at the Saratoga Automobile Museum in Saratoga Springs, New York. The exhibition is dubbed “BMW – The Ultimate Driving Machine”, it will run all the way till November 3, 2013.

Andy Warhol’s 1979 BMW M1 Art Car wioll be the center piece at the exhibition while other special models will give it support during the exhibition. Since the museum is dedicated to preserve, interpret and exhibit automobiles and automotive artifacts, they have chosen a variety of models suited for this exhibition. The exhibition will also celebrate 90 Years of BMW Motorcycles.

Starting with Andy Warhol’s 1979 BMW M1 Art Car; Andy was commissioned to transform a BMW M1 into an Art Car. Other artists had done that by painting a draft version on a scaled- down model. Andy painted everything by himself and he even said that he tried to portray speed pictorially and that if a car is moving really quickly, all the lines and colors are blurred.

Other cars in the exhibition include the BMW 3.0 CSL which won the Daytona 24 Hour race in 1976, prewar model such as the BMW 328, custom-bodied 328MM, prepared for the Mille Miglia, the 507 Roadster, and designed by Count Albrecht von Goertz and the spiritual successor to the 507, the BMW Z8 which arrived in the 2000s.
