Tesla has revealed that they have started a development program with Daimler to build a new electric Mercedes-Benz vehicle with a Tesla powertrain, including the motor, gearbox, inverter and software.

Daimler invested in the US company in 2009 and uses its battery packs in the electric Smart. So it doesn’t come as a surprise that the German carmaker is working with the EV specialist from the States on a new electric car.

Tesla says it’ll recognize revenue from the program beginning in the second quarter, but it is unknown when the car will officially be revealed to the public and press.

The news follows after last week’s unveiling of its third car the Model X crossover SUV in Los Angeles and the $ 40 million or 500 units worth of reservations, making the Model X the “fastest selling Tesla ever”.
