Sport Car Spring Rally 2008

Over 180 sportscars gathered this weekend for the 6th annual Sport Car Spring Rally. Starting and finishing in Maastricht it set out a route to discover the best roads in the area. The rally was held in a way similar to classic car rallies: at the startline a routebook with instructions in ball / arrow format was handed to the participants. All classic and modern sportscars were placed in either the tour or sport class. The list of sportscars participating included many classic and modern supercars including a couple McLaren SLR’s, Lamborghini Murcielago’s, BMW Z1’s, Porsche 997 GT3 RS, Porsche 997 Turbo, Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, a rare Invicta S1, a Bentley Speed Six Special and an Aston Martin DB2/4!

The event kicked off on friday with registration, dinner and two activities required for the overall ranking: a quiz and a race simulator challenge. The quiz consisted of 10 automotive related multiple choice questions. In the garden of the Novotel Maastricht they had lined up 5 race simulators and the challenge was to set a fast laptime on the Belgian circuit of Zolder. After a practise lap one driver of each time had two laps to set a fast laptime. On friday night there was a 50km evening rally through the Netherlands and Belgium. The average speed to get the most points was set at 44 km/h.

On saturday the tour class had a route of 240 km and the sport class a 300 km long route including a special sportlap where the teams had to gather letters along a route indicated by small arrows on a map. Again a part of this route was timed and this time the sportclass had to try and get a 55 km/h average speed over the measured distance. After the last timed checkpoint all teams had to return to the finish at the Novotel Maastricht. After a little lunch a number of teams were stopped by police, not for speeding but to let a bicycle race pass. After an exhausting but fun day all teams returned to the Novotel for the dinner, prize ceremony and party!

The Sport Car Spring Rally was a lot of fun and great value for money. Our four teams agreed that it comes close to the most fun you can have on four wheels and we wil definately be back for the Sport Car Spring Rally 2009! For more information, photos and videos visit our forum!
