The Terme di Saturnia are world famous in Italy and beyond! We headed to Southern Tuscany to experience the famous volcanic hot spring and the luxury hotel first hand.

Location

The Terme di Saturnia resort is located directly at the famous Saturnia hot springs in Southern Tuscany about 1.5 hours away from Rome and 45 minutes away from the Mediterranean coast. Already in Roman times the Saturnia springs were a popular destination to bath and relax. The volcanic hot springs are what make this luxury resort truly unique. The 128 room property is set in lush gardens directly surrounding the hot spring. The spring is filled with 37 degree water that comes up through volcanic rock directly below. The water boils up at a rate of 500 liters per second and the entire pool is refilled naturally with fresh spring water five times a day.

Directly next to the exclusive hotel garden and spring are the public parts of the Terme di Saturnia where day guests enjoy the pools and spa treatments. But the hotel has its own pools, waterfalls and spa.

From Terme Di Saturnia it is also easy to take a day trip to the beach or explore the surrounding Tuscan countryside – in our case we visited the beautiful rocky beach of the befriended Hotel Torre di Calle Picolla on the Argentario peninsula and the beautiful hill top town of Pitigliano.

The Hotel

The Terme di Saturnia hotel celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. First opened in 1956 it consists of one main building with several wings. It is home to 128 guestrooms, two restaurants, a bar, spa and large landscaped gardens with the main pool and relax area.

The hotel is surrounded by the 18-hole Terme di Saturnia golf club. The main gate is hard to miss on the main road and once the gate opens a driveway extends for over a mile to the entrance of the hotel. Here we were welcomed by one of the doormen who parked our car and helped us with our luggage.

The Rooms
Our room number 264 is located on the second floor and is a classic Italian luxury room. The amenities include a large marble bathroom with separate bath and shower, flat screen tv and a small walk-in closet.

Spa

The heart of the hotel is all about the unique hot spring and most guests are taking baths in the sulphate-rich waters multiple times a day. The spring waters are said to be very good for the skin. For maximum effect it is advised to bath 30 minutes at a time and take a break between sessions. The gardens are lined with rows of sunbeds and around the garden you can find jacuzzis, waterfalls and Kneip baths for guests to enjoy. There is also an indoor area with a sauna and steam bath.

The spa offers various treatments from massages to beauty treatments. We tried a relaxing massage with rejuvenating oils – worth a try while there. Swimming in the hot spring is a unique experience and due to the unique composition of the water swimming feels heavier than in normal water. The only downside of the sulphate rich water is that you can smell the sulphate clearly – although you can get used to it quickly.

Golf course

The 18 hole golf course was built in 2009 and blends in nicely with the Tuscan countryside. The designers tried to use as much of the available natural environment and succeeded very nicely. No expense was spared and even a large part of the power lines were put underground. While playing golf here you can expect to see some rare animals like beavers and peacocks. There are some challenging Par 4 and 5 holes with water features or blind sections.

The golf clubhouse is set near the main gate of the resort on a hill overlooking the stunning Tuscan countryside. The club is open to members, hotel guests and outside guests. The Terme di Saturnia golf club hosts various tournaments throughout the year.

Restaurants & Bars

The hotel has two restaurants; the main restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and has a terrace overlooking the main pool. The other restaurant is rewarded with one Michelin star and is open for dinner only. The food is traditional Italian with a great selection of wines. The food as well as the service was excellent.

Facilities & Service

Terme Di Saturnia recently installed two wallbox charges for electric cars so guests and golfers can recharge their cars during their stay or during a golf game. The service was great from the moment we arrived til the moment we left. At the relaxing area it would be nice if there was some drinks service – at least to get some bottles of water.

Conclusion

The Terme di Saturnia Resort is something unique, it is a true wellness hotel with the volcanic hot spring as main feature. The style of the rooms is quite traditional and would appeal to me more if they were a bit more modern. The food and the service are really good. The facilities are good and the golf course is both beautiful and challenging. It is located a bit far from the highway but once you are in Saturnia there is a lot to explore both at the resort and the surrounding area of Southern Tuscany.
