Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that there is definitely interest for it to produce a Mercedes-Maybach branded SUV to occupy the emerging luxury SUV segment and to rival the Bentley Bentayga, Rolls-Royce Cullinan and Lamborghini Urus.

While speaking with Automotive News about the car, Mercedes-Benz U.S. Sales boss Steve Cannon said that with demand for such models continually on the rise, a Mercedes-Maybach SUV could be a “natural fit” for the brand.

“There’s just an almost unending appetite for SUVs, and luxury SUVs are proving that. Look at what’s happening with the Bentleys of the world and even Lamborghini thinking about it. There’s an appetite, a market for that. When we get to that point that we expand the Maybach offering — and we will expand the Maybach offering — that would be a natural place to go.”

Andreas Zygan, the director of development for SUVs at Mercedes-Benz expanded on this by saying “We are looking at everything that is going on with that segment.”

If a Mercedes-Maybach SUV is produced, it will inevitably be based around the impending new GLS. To rival the aforementioned vehicles as well as a potential new offering from Range Rover, the car would receive a host of new luxuries from the S-Class Maybach models as well as a suite of new options and configurable finishes and components.
