Mercedes-Benz G 500 4×4²

The Mercedes-Benz G 500 4×4² is another highlight of a packed Mercedes-Benz Geneva Motor Show 2015 stand. If the volume of new releases doesn’t seem to be much, the size of the cars certainly is. The Mercedes-Benz G 500 4×4² is absolutely massive. Making its debut alongside the Mercedes-Maybach Pullman, the two make a pretty imposing display on their own! We took a closer look at this 4 wheeled monster!

The Mercedes-Benz G 500 4×4² is a near-production ready show car. Although it is billed as a show car for the time being, a substantial amount of testing has already been carried out and we expect the 4×4² to make production at some point in the near future.

The Mercedes-Benz G 500 4×4² is fitted with a brand new V8. The 4.0 litre unit gets two turbochargers mounted inside the V8. It produces 422 hp and 610 Nm of torque, enough for a 210 km/h top speed. The 0-100 km/h time is largely irrelevant for a car like this, especially considering its 2,980 kg weight.

The Mercedes-Benz G 500 4×4² is quite similar to the G 63 AMG 6×6. It features one less axle but with two springs and two damper struts per wheel, it retains a similar sort of off-road ability. The increase ride height over the standard G 500, 45 cm – 24 cm extra, means that this G-Wagon is capable of wading deeper than any other G-Wagon.

Other advantages of the Mercedes-Benz G 500 4×4² include the shorter overhangs which make steeper obstacles less of a problem. It is wider than the standard G-Wagon too which makes it more stable. Three diff locks allow the 4×4 to cover almost any ground whereas two choices of tyres (20 inch and 18 inch) give the best of on and off-road usability.
