In August last year, Volkswagen revealed the latest generation Golf R. Now for the first time, the German automaker is preparing an estate variant of the Golf R and a bright red prototype was recently snapped on the Nurburgring with absolutely no camouflage.

Because Volkswagen was so open with testing an undisguised Golf R Estate test mule, we expect the car to make its debut online in coming weeks. It is then expected to be unveiled in the flesh at December’s Essen Motor Show 2014.

As with the standard Volkswagen Golf R, the Golf R Estate is easy to distinguish from all other Golf Estate variants. For example, it features a much more aggressive front bumper and splitter package, redesigned air intakes, an R badge on the front grille as well as extended side skirts. Additionally, the ride height has been lowered while the rear is dominated by a new bumper, diffuser and quad tailpipe setup.

Beneath the skin, the Volkswagen Golf R Estate will feature the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine as the hatchback. As a result, it will deliver the same 296 hp and 380 Nm of torque. Due to the extra weight of the R Estate however, it won’t be quite as quick off the line and should hit 100 km/h in just over 5 seconds when equipped with the dual-clutch transmission.
