At the start of next year, Mercedes-Benz will start producing the GLA in China thanks to its joint venture with the Beijing Benz Automotive Co (BBAC). Now it has emerged that additional Mercedes-Benz compact cars will be built in the Asian nation down the road.

While Mercedes-Benz has yet to reveal just what these models will be, we do know that the two companies are set to invest just over $5 billion into the Chinese production facility by 2015. A further $1.27 billion will be used to kick start production of further compact cars from Mercedes-Benz.

Discussing the news, Daimler CEO Dr. Dieter Zetsche said, “This strategic investment in the localization of compact cars will give us better access to the huge growth potential that this segment offers in the mid-term, and so pave the way for Mercedes-Benz’s sustainable growth.”
