On the back of the launch of the already popular Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz has just announced the CLA 45 AMG Racing Series Concept Car ahead of a world debut at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show 2013. The Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG Racing Series Concept Car follows the extremely successful roots of the SLS AMG GT3 racing car.

The car pictured is not entirely race ready and will be slightly improved before Mercedes launches a full-blown CLA 45 AMG Racing Series soon with cars set to compete in a variety of different international racing series in the future such as the German VLN series. Accordingly, technical specifications of the Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG racing car will vary depending on what competition they’re participating in. However, it’s been confirmed that the car will be available in both front wheel drive and all-wheel drive variations just like the road variant depending on what each racing series specifies.

As is immediately apparent from the following images, the Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG Racing Series Concept Car has been significantly changed from the road-going variant we recently tested. New features include a new front apron, rear apron, flared wings and side sill panels. All of these have been made from lightweight carbon fiber reinforced plastic. Additionally, the Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG Racing Series Concept Car is rolling on a set of slick racing tires and features a massive rear wing for added downforce.

The car has also received wider wheel arches which have been flared by over 6cm on each side and help further cool the brakes through the small air intakes. Additionally, the CLA 45 AMG Racing Series Concept Car features easily adjustable track-specific suspension which can be modified and adjusted for varying track conditions. In fact, the suspension level, spring rate and damper characteristics are all adjustable.

Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH Ola Källenius said, “With the CLA 45 AMG Racing Series we are providing a preview of another exciting customer sports racing car from Mercedes-AMG. The great success of our involvement with the SLS AMG GT3, which is now used by customer teams on five continents, means that we are very confident: in the popular four-cylinder segment too, we want to offer interested customer teams a competitive, near-series racing car with a high level of safety.”
