This years Le Mans 24 Hours was one of the toughest in history. Not necessarily because of the tecnhicaly limitations of the cars, no that wasn’t it.

It was the rain, the seemingly infinitely changing weather. And the tragedy. This years Le Mans marked the first time in over 30 years that a driver lost his life during the race. Only nine minutes into the race, 34 year old Danish driver Allan Simoneson lost his life while at the wheel of the #95 Aston Martin. In the video below, Porsche does well not only to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 911, but to pay proper tribute to the loss we all witnessed at this years event.

And while many had deemed it impossible for Porsche to reach the podium for the 911’s 50th anniversary and for Le Mans’ 90th, they did just that. The narration in the video is a touching tribute to the perils that face every driver and to the triumphs that await those brave enough to face them. According to Porsche, they are “back where they belong” — on the podium at Le Mans. A chilling precursor to their return to LMP1 next year.

Watch the video above and tell us what you think below. Congratulations to Porsche for taking the 1st and 2nd steps on the Le Mans podium. We can’t wait until next year!
