Hurricane Sandy made landfall along the eastern seaboard of the United States earlier this week, leaving behind a swath of destruction, leaving many in New York without power to this very moment.

However, things were a bit worse in Port Newark, New Jersey where Jalopnik is reporting a total of 16 Fisker Karma’s have been destroyed by fire in the aftermath of Sandy – although not during the storm. Supposedly after the storm had passed and flood waters had calmed, 16 Karma’s were reportedly “submerged in a storm surge, then caught fire and exploded”, according to a source close to Jalopnik.

Prior Karma fires have claimed owners’ vehicles in Woodside California and Sugar Land, Texas, with multiple other accounts of fire being reported all across the United States. The Hurricane Sandy fires come after Fisker and A123 Systems, their battery supplier, recalled over 600 Karma’s due to a defect in the battery system that would, you guessed it – cause them to catch fire.

Fisker has since released a statement reassuring owners safety is the primary concern of Fisker, and that no injuries were reported in conjunction with the fires. You can see all the photos on Jalopnik, here.

  1. This story is just another sensationalist Jalopnik smear job against Fisker.

LA Times has now reported that 3 brands lost several cars to fires on that pier including Toyota (3 Prius) and Fisker, amongst several thousand flooded. Over 300 + car fires have been reported due to being submerged in salt water for hours / days in NY/NJ/CT.

Stop picking on Fisker and the electric hybrids. We need them to reduce CO2 emissions that are energizing these freakishly strong storms!

This is not a Fisker or hybrid-issue, as much as conservatives want it to be to smear the green technologies. This is a global-warming denial drives superstorms that destroy lives and property issue. More freakish storms and sea level rise will keep doing so as long as ‘conservatives’ keep their heads in the sand instead of thinking a bit more intelligently about how to prevent this kind of property destruction by putting the brakes on global warming. THAT would be the conservative thing to do.

  3. Electric or Hybrid are not the answer anyway and are dead in the water. Hydrogen will be. Where do you think you get your electricity from to charge the car up. Power Stations run on Fossil Fuels. How long does it take to fill your car up with gas/petrol 5 mins and then it lasts 400miles. How long does it take to charge a car 5hours then lasts if your lucky 100miles. Hydrogen cars can fill in 5mins and last 400miles similar to petrol.

  4. I agree 1oo% with Richard, hydrogen is the answer. It is a shame all these car companires are following each other and the hype with electric cars.

  5. @Richard, it takes a lot of electricity to get Hydrogen from water… very inefficient. Guess what, Hydrogen is flammable too but it probably wouldn't catch fire if drowned in salt water like the Karmas.
